We’re having a ball!
Welcome to the CYBILS Scribbles!
Hasn’t the World Cup been a hoot? Even people who typically don’t care about sportsball at all have had moments of being astonished at the sheer …spectacle. (Looking at you, Scotland.) Social media has served up a ton of great reminders that, whatever political nonsense heads of nations get up to (or sports organizations - looking at you, FIFA), people of all nations love a good game, and ‘football’ - if you’re in Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia - or ‘soccer’ - if you’re in the U.S., Canada, and Australia - can truly be, in the words of the Brazilian soccer legend Pelé, “the beautiful game.” If you’re missing the feeling of being a part of the team, this booklist will bring it all back to you…
THAT’S A LOT OF CANDLES… Two hundred and fifty years is basically forever IRL, but as far as countries go, it’s just a drop in the bucket in terms of longevity. Nevertheless, we’re proud to celebrate our 250 years young country this year. From a fledgling set of colonies to fifty individual states, we’ve come a long way, and there’s so much room to grow to grow stronger and wiser. The best gift a country receives is informed, active VOTERS, so make sure you’re registered, and celebrate! Here’s to us.
National Moth Week is July 18-26. Though moths mostly show up in popular media during cottagecore adjacent spooky season moments, midsummer is actually one of the best times to go mothing. Moths are important pollinators, a major food source for birds, bats, and other small animals, so citizen scientists during this week pay special attention to their numbers as they observe, photograph, and identify moth species. This is a short list, because people tend to be daytime/butterfly fans, and there aren’t that many moth books… yet. But, if you love one we’ve missed, let us know!

“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” now has a permanent YouTube channel where anyone will be able to find all the shows that were ever made, no matter PBS funding cuts. YAY!
Don’t worry, you can’t hit the cows.
There will be no Margaret in Menopause. Judy’s done. No, for real.
What did you do on the Fourth this year? Whether you stayed home with your dog 🐶 or you went out to see a drone display, we hope you had a ball! 🧁Meanwhile the rest of these sultry summer days, eat a cupcake for us, wear a hat, and don’t forget your napkin when you read and eat one-handed. 🌭 (We see you… and use a floating tray if you’re reading in the pool. Just sayin’.) 🎆We wish you clear night skies 🌃glorious, sparkly stars🎇 and the best of books. 📚
