The Morning RSS - Wednesday 31 Jan 2024
A collection of share-worthy items from our morning blog scroll.
Can we squeeze in one more round up before the calendar flips to February? Why, yes. Yes we can! Grab a cuppa - lots to savor and even a few things to raise your āglassā to!
For Writers & Creators
A bit meta (talking about revisions to a book about revising), but enlightening, fun, and really cool. Betsy Bird interviews Dave Eggers (yes, the guy who won the Newbery) about his new book Sorenās Song at A Fuse #8 Production.
Whether you write books or illustrate them, there is a lot to take away from DulcĆ© Sloanās interview with Vashti Harrison about her Caldecott-winning book BIG. Anton the Storyteller (Bluesky) teased it as āa powerful interview and worth checking out,ā and he is so right. Itās on YouTube. Check it out here.
New Books & Book Lists
In last edition we brought you the 2024 mock winners of the Sydney Taylor Book Award. Updated: The Sydney Taylor Schmooze brings you the Real Sydney Taylor Book Award winners ā¦ with a side-by-side comparison.
There are lots of posts with all of the 2023 ALA Youth Media Award winners and honor books, but thereās only 1 place we go to see them: the Literacious blog. Why? Because Laura is a librarian. āNuf said.
Speaking of Laura ā¦ sheās followed up her 2024 books by MG authors with a post about YA books by debut authors debuting this year (get it?)? There were some weāve seen on other lists, but lots of new-to-us titles on this collection of 40+ books.
This oneās for the movie buffs ā¦ check out this
post with the Books 2024 Oscar Nominees are based on. Not all the nominees are films based on books, but quite a few are. What do poetry, murder, and romance have in common? Weāre not sure, but there are four new books in those genres releasing this week. Check āem out at Rich In Color.
Book Bans & Censorship
For 2024, weāre going to flip the perspective on book bans and censorship. Instead of sharing the head-shaking news, weāre going to share head-nodding ideas!
Five states and counting ā¦ New Jersey introduces a bill to curb book bans. The bill not only protects access to books, but also includes protections for librarians, particularly school librarians. Kelly has all the details in her
newsletter."Having these books, having these stories out there meant a lot to me, because I felt seen."
A secret shelf of banned books thrives in a Texas school, under the nose of censors, via NPR - All Things Considered. Lets hope the press exposure doesnāt risk continuation of the secret shelf!
Other Bookish Stuff
Happy Wednesday! Keep dreaming about that book-filled weekend. It will be here soon.
Love the shift in focus re: book banning news!
