The last weekend of June marks the Strawberry Moon, the first official full moon of the summer. Historically, indigenous peoples of the Algonquin, Lakota, Dakota, and Ojibwe Nations celebrated this moon as heralding peak season for wild strawberries.🍓While our berries come tamely from the grocery store - or if we’re really lucky, our gardens - in the Northern Hemisphere at least, now is their time. 🏆It’s also time for a throwback book - the 1946 Newbery Award winner, STRAWBERRY GIRL, written and illustrated by Lois Lensky! This book tells the story of Florida pioneer Birdie Boyer, who dearly wants to plant and grow strawberries in her new state. This is a charming look back at early 20th-century Florida - not a state usually associated with pioneering - depicting how traditional subsistence farming and running cattle free-range, as done by the Slater family, came into conflict with new ways of commercial agriculture that the Boyers family did. Interpersonal conflict, friction, and negotiation are central themes of the novel, as Birdie learns to deal with people wholly unlike herself and her family. The book has distinct Christian themes, and is written in a dialect which some readers may find off-putting, but the persistent will note that Birdie does get her strawberries in the end. If you love a vintage book, this one is ‘berry’ sweet, so dive in! 🍓

It’s Ghibli Fest season! Ghibli Fest is a joint celebration between AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters to show a selection of Studio Ghibli films every summer. It’s not always the same ones - but usually includes at least one of the best-known films, like Kik’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, or Spirited Away. You should check it out!
