MAY contains …nerdery! 😎
it’s the CYBILS Scribble!
Happy May, Book People! Finally, finally, we’re seein’ a light at the end of the tunnel - and that light is flashing the word SUMMER in sunny yellow bursts. Blue skies and bright days ahead - tell us, what bookish goodness have you accomplished with your one wild precious life this month?
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain was written in 1867, and is a classic tall tale told in Twain’s deadpan satirical style. It’s a fun one, gently poking fun at frontier life, country bumpkins, and gullible city folk. When we encountered this short story in high school, we had zero idea that it would…er, spawn its own little holiday - but here we are! We were this many years old when we discovered a picture book about the competition, which takes place every May 13th in the tiny town of Angels Camp, California, which is indeed in Calaveras County. ROSIE THE RIBETER by Darcy Pattison and illustrated by Nathaniel Gold is a convergence of two unfairly cute things - small county fairs and adorably confused frogs - and in this case, a female frog who gave the Calaveras County Fair & Frog Jumping Jubilee her utmost. Your CYBILS Scribbles team is all the way down with making every single day of this and any month a full-on celebration, so - from us to you- happy Frog Jumping Day! May we all be like Rosie the Ribeter and leap right into each day with our whole hearts and with both feet. 🐸
LEAP, HOP, JUMP - BOOKS THAT MOVE
MAY is both Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month as well as Older American Month. These two celebrations are winners alone or together, as elders are celebrated in a lot of Asian and Pacific Island cultures. Older American Month celebrates people sixty-five years old and older, so we hope these two book lists bring to mind some of your favorite grandparents, aunties, teachers, librarians, neighbors, and friends.

Huh. Crystal Light drink mixes for “book club season.” Bookclub SEASON?? What’s that?
An offbeat collab between nonprofit Storycorps and Prego seeks to capture dinner talk. Eat your pasta, and record your life stories for the Library of Congress! Huh.
Unbreakable glasses… $1??? Teachers still are showing us we can ALL change the world. In the immortal words of Cory Booker, “Never let your inability to do everything undermine your determination to do something.”
May is the official national kickoff of picnic season, if you were uninformed (it’s like Bookclub Season, only, you know, real). 🧺While many people are getting ready for their Memorial Day parties, you need to get warmed up for the big book event. So, after some light stretching, please: a.) grab a blanket and a water bottle, b.) find a quiet patch of grass, preferably under a tree or in shade, c.) open your backpack d.) take out your book, e.) read to your heart’s content. 📖 Rinse and repeat all month long. Happy May, Scribbles Squad! Hug your elders, wear your sunscreen, don’t let the seagulls steal your fries, and be sure to share a book if you love it! We wish you sunny afternoons, soft breezes, minimal allergies🤧, and as always, all the best of books. 📚
